8/31/2017: VSS appointment. Vet was pleased that his bowels were moving with the current schedule of feedings and administering of stool softeners and that he weighed in at 16.1 lbs, is able to run, play, enjoy his foster siblings and was very much alive. At this point, surgery to correct his sphincter opening is not an option due to possibly doing more damage and paralyzing both back legs. There is also possible problems later that his good leg may become like his other one rendering that one immobile, however, this is not certain. Fish oil, glucosamine, and fiber will be added to aid his future well being. Foster is to call VSS or local vet if any diarrhea or blockages should occur but no followup is needed at this time. He will likely be on special food, stool softeners, and supplements for quite a while. 8/12/2017 UPDATE:  UPDATE on Chance! Chance went to the vet today because of a bowel blockage. The vet was very pleased with the amount of progress this little guy has made so far. As many of you know, he's been seeing specialists and been on a special diet, and has progressed wonderfully. Chance will be seeing his specialist again on August 31 to discuss possible amputation of his right hind leg, and re breaking and setting of his pelvis because the way it grew back together narrowed his canal so much that he has bowel blockages frequently. As always, all prayers, good vibes, and donations will be greatly appreciated on this sweet boy's road to recovery! Pulled from the Piedmont, MO kill pound, Chance was going to be put to sleep. We couldn't let that happen. He has an old injury and is being evaluated by Hillcrest Vet in Poplar Bluff now. To be continued. Chance was picked up and placed in the Piedmont kill pound, injured. He was dragging one hind leg and urinating on himself. Piedmont Pound Paws rescue pulled him and placed him with a foster, who took him immediately to a vet to be evaluated and treated as much as possible. He has a crushed pelvis and was not able to have a BM. He is now being evaluated by the Vet. Specialist Services (VSS) in STL to see how he can be repaired to a functional mode. He may also lose one of his back legs, as well. We will update this asap. 7/2/2017 For those of you following "Chance," the poor injured pup that Piedmont Pound Paws has under it's wings, he is in foster care, with Gina Fitzwater, getting meds, eating well, but cannot seem to control his bowels. VSS wanted to see how he does on the stool softeners for a week or so and then come in to be evaluated on July 11th to see what the next step is. There is some concern that doing orthopedic surgery may cause more nerve damage so addressing the bowel problem is first, the way I understand it. He can get around, Gina Fitzwater has reported, and she can correct me, that she has seen him actually stand or support himself with the leg that he usually drags or lifts when "walking." My unprofessional perspective of this, based on only a few experiences, that animals can and do adapt to some injuries provided their body organs can function. We all have seen videos of special pets injured or even born with disabilities that are thriving with a family that loves them. (Disclaimer: this is not an official veterinarian opinion or report. This is my perspective.) Piedmont Pound Paws still needs donations to pay for his care. You can PayPal to piedmontpoundpaws@gmail.com for now. After July 11th, I will post what is going on from there. Thanks for any amount you can spare.
